Your Favourite Beach Log Has a Secret

Those peaceful driftwood logs on our beaches? They're secretly bulldozing marine life. UVic researchers discovered that over 90% of beach logs move during storms, grinding across rocks and wiping out up to 80% of barnacle populations. Fewer barnacles mean less food for shorebirds—which the authors suggest explains why some bird populations have dropped 50% since 1970.

Esquimalt Switches to Monitoring-Only for Deer Management

Esquimalt is shifting from contraceptives to monitoring-only for deer management, saving $75,000 annually while staff survey residents and develop a comprehensive plan for council to reconsider next year. The contraceptive program had reduced fawn births by 28% over three years. Mayor Barb Desjardins was the lone vote to continue, noting residents regularly raise concerns about safety and garden damage. One couple got stuck with a $300 bill to dispose of an injured deer in their yard. Oak Bay discontinued a similar program, and UVic researchers say they're hearing from Oak Bay residents that deer are becoming a problem again.
