This week celebrates International Women's Day (March 8) alongside some eccentric Victoria activities: competitively counting flowers, teaching kids about opera, and an upcoming "Picklefest" this summer (focusing on pickles, not pickleball).
Beyond the headliners, there’s singles coffee dates, drag bingo, forest bathing, and volunteer opportunities as a "wildlife chef" or "animal ambulance" driver—plus a massive consignment sale with 20,000+ kids items from local families.
Plus, as always, our Top 3 family-friendly picks and local news stories—including why Greater Victoria counted 44 billion flowers last year.

🌸 Greater Victoria's Flower-Counting Competition Returns
Only in Greater Victoria: counting flowers is a competitive sport. The 51st annual Greater Victoria Flower Count (March 4-11) challenges residents to tally every bloom and compete for "bloomingest community" bragging rights. Last year's count? 44 billion. Yes, billion. The secret: estimate trees at 250,000 to 750,000 blooms each and grab the tally sheet at flowercount.com. Winner gets glory, not prizes. This is what happens when you live somewhere that blooms in February while the rest of Canada is buried in snow.

🦅 Wild ARC Needs 100 Volunteers for Baby Animal Season
Spring means baby season, and Wild ARC in Metchosin needs 100 volunteers before chaos hits. Last year, volunteers donated 17,000 hours caring for 2,000+ animals—hummingbirds to river otters. Monthly intake jumps from 75 now to 400+ in spring. Roles include "wildlife chef" (species-specific meals) and "animal ambulance" driver. Must be 19, though 16-18 year-olds welcome with parental permission. Apply by April 30 if you're passionate about wildlife.
