News Bites

🦉 Watch for Low-Flying Owls on Greater Victoria Roads

While driving in View Royal, our family here at the Scoop once had to slam our car brakes as two owls flew directly into our path and started battling mid-air—right there in our headlights. We sat stunned, watching this roadside showdown. They eventually flew away, and luckily, we managed to stop in time to avoid them. Turns out, encounters like ours are alarmingly common. BC SPCA Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre treats 60 owls annually for vehicle strikes, with February especially dangerous. Owls also hunt rodents along road shoulders, flying low at car height. Food scraps tossed from vehicles attract rodents, bringing owls closer to traffic. Another good reason not to litter!

💗 Pink Shirt Day: Teaching Kids That Kindness is Cool

Remember when bullying was just "part of growing up"? Pink Shirt Day (February 25) changed that conversation. It started in 2007 when Nova Scotia teens bought 50 pink shirts for a bullied Grade 9 student. That simple act launched a global movement—last year, people in 180 countries participated. Since 2008, Pink Shirt Day has raised over $3 million for anti-bullying programs, helping 50,000+ youth learn that kindness is cool.
